I was the radio operator on a Marine patrol down highway 49 and we came under sniper fire. We moved to counter it and came upon this magnificent structure. The sniper had fled leaving the tomb for us to enjoy in peace. We were overwhelmed such a thing could have survived what we had done a few weeks earlier. For me, I will never forget Hue and part of the reason is this structure.

The Khai Dinh Tomb is a masterpiece of Vietnamese artisans early in the 20th century. This is the sign of arts of past but still looking gorgeous.

I've been to Vietnam several times but I've never visited this tomb! It looks like an interesting place to check out along with the palace. Thanks for bringing this to the attention of Vietnam-lovers everywhere.

truly magnificent…

Elliott C. Martinez from Agios Ioannis Agrou - 04/27/2010 03:33:30

Standing from this elaborate structure, you can look over the surrounding valleys and hills from every direction. The magnificent staircase takes a bit of effort to climb up, but every sight along its path is worth it. The top terrace contains the mausoleum the outside looks drab and grey but the surprise is on the inside which is very ornate and highly decorated. The ceiling is finely painted in the style of grand European palaces but instead of cherubs paintings of an Eastern nature include the mystical dragons. A tour guide helps you better understand the history behind the whole complex. By the way, there is electricity inside the tomb which keeps the tomb lit at all times. Truly a sight to see!
