The End of Cyclos?

The End of Cyclos?

In ${bigcity_Hanoi:"Hanoi"}, cyclos are a common sight. A cyclo is an open-air pedicab often found in the busy streets of the city. But lately, they are facing extinction as the government is thinking of banning these time-old transportation as the slow-moving vehicles are causing traffic and even accidents. According to cultural leaders, cyclos help in the promotion of the city’s tourism industry. In fact, in the long time that they have been part of the culture, they can be considered a tradition. But to some people, they are an obstruction to traffic and they should be put away for good.

Nguyen Duc Nhahn, Hanoi Police Department Director, stated that current traffic regulations permit cyclo drivers to travel at a maximum of five abreast. If more than five cyclos are travveling in a group, they must do so in a distance of 200 meters apart. Unfortunately, most cyclo drivers disobey these laws. This sentiment by the Hanoi Police Department Director is echoed by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, adding that most cyclos instead travel by 40-50 per group, invading the narrow streets and freezing traffic. There are 324 licensed cyclos in Hanoi, but more than 1,000 pedicabs are operating the city. Because of this, Police Department Director Nhan decided that a comprehensive inspection of cyclos in Hanoi should be conducted. Pedicabs of illegal operators should be caught. The number of cyclos should be limited and ultimately, they will be totally removed from the streets of Hanoi.
