Chuon Lagoon: Of Early Mornings, Fish and Pancakes

Chuon Lagoon draws interest from would-be visitors from its stunning early morning sight of local fishermen out catching shrimp and kinh fish (siganus canaloculatu), and its local delicacy banh khoai (typical fried pancake in Hue), among others.
Chuon Lagoon is situated at Phu An Commune, Phu Vang District, Thua Thien-Hue Province. Typical of a province, the place has big roads, narrow village paths, breathaking atmosphere, fresh air, and a simple but peaceful life all in all.
Fishing is the main livelihood and attraction at Chuon Lagoon. But it is not limited to the men. In fact, it is a family affair which includes the wife and children pitching in their role in the business.
Kinh is a kind of fish that is especially abundant at Chuon Lagoon and so is naturally a specialty at Hue. The kinh season is from the fourth to the seventh month of the lunar year. Each kilogram bought at the lagoon costs about VND100,000. Shrimp is also common and aplenty, one kilo priced at about VND150,000.
Banh khoai is a fried pancake, a local Hue delicacy. To add twist to this otherwise typical specialty, banh khoai ca kinh is made, basically a pancake with fish. To make this, a small pan is first coated with cooking oil. The fish and/ or shrimp is then put to make it sizzle. The rice flour is then added and fried with the meat. Cooked over rice husk fire, the simple but delicious dish is finished and can be enjoyed in just about two minutes.
Another way of serving the dish is serving both the pancake and fish separately. The fish is dipped in a bowl of pure fish sauce with sliced chili. Kinh is a small fish so it has to be eaten as a whole, including the intestines, in order to fully enjoy the taste of the meat. But for those who are not into internal organ-ingesting or fish as a whole, shrimp can be served with the pancake instead. In fact, vegetarians can also sample and enjoy the meal by opting for a plain pancake made from rice flour with bean sprouts and green onions to satisfy the vegetable lovers' taste.
Kinh can also be prepared with sour soup with bamboo shoots as an ingredient. Best of all, all these dishes are unbelievably affordable that a big order of each dish can cost as little as VND15,000 and be completely full and satisfied.
