Da Nang: Wrap and Roll

Da Nang: Wrap and Roll

Amid the unbelievably mushrooming number of food establishments and most especially varieties of dishes today, there's an old restaurant in Da Nang which still serves traditional local cuisine, and surprisingly or not, people still patronize. In fact, tourists who visit the place don't leave until they get a taste of the eatery's popular, almost legendary, meals.
Quan Tran Restaurant is an old-fashioned diner located in a quiet, private road along Le Duan Street. It has a simple yet authentic Mandarin theme, complete with a fish pond, stone bridge, and pillars.
Quang Tran is notorious for its Banh Trang Thit Heo. Quang noodles is the staple meal not only in Da Nang but in the whole Quang Nam Province. It is a chicken noodle dish soaked in a rich red sauce. It can be a variety of pork, shrimp, or a mixture of both meats. It is called Pho in Ha Noi and Bun Bo in Hue. But Quang Tran beats this traditional food with its amazing wrap-it-yourself rolls.
Rice paper is used as wrapping material for Banh Trang Thit Heo. It is then stuffed with herbs and vegetables such as mint, lettuce, bean sprouts (thinly sliced shreds), cucumber, green banana, julienned ginger, and fresh garlic. Finely shredded lean meat is placed between slices of lard and skin at either ends. Fish sauce is used for dipping, but not any or the commercial type. Authentic and traditional fish sauce is used, the kind which is thick and dark due to the following original fish sauce ingredients: anchovy bone pieces, diced pineapple, sugar, lime juice, finely chopped pepper and garlic. Da Nang's version of this meal is especially popular because it uses boiled pork. In it fish sauce, the garlic is the secret ingredient which makes the concoction edible. On the other hand, the julienned ginger balances the sauce.
Banh Trang Thit Heo is a healthy meal because of its abundance of vegetables and little fat. Quang noodles cost about VND29,000 while Quang Tran's famous rolls are priced at around VND79,000. There may be a significant price differene between the two famous meals, but with Banh Trang Thit Heo being a healthy food; a “leisurely” meal which is meant to be savored and eaten slowly; and shared between family and/ or friends, it's definitely worth it, one which is constantly patronized by both locals and foreigners.
Other local delicacies at Da Nang are: Banh Trang Dap, roasted pancake under steamed pancake. It costs VND16,000; and Bun mam, a combination of chopped roast pork, vegetables, peanuts, fried onions, mixed together with marinated fish sauce. It costs VND17,000. Beef can also be used in place of fish, but costing more at VND89,000.
Quang Tran Restaurant also has a “summer pavillion” which can cater to small groups of around 10 guests for special occasions such as meetings, parties and other celebrations. Aiming to satisfy customers of all ages, it also has a special beef and pork rice congee for its young clients. The area may not have a big playing space for children, but it has an ample and wholesome environment enough for them to have fun while the adults can sit in peace enjoying their food and savoring the atmosphere.
The quaint yet popular diner has been around for a while and to show its gratitude to its patrons, it will celebrate its 10th anniversary by giving away 150 bicycles to poor but smart students across the central region. With its long history and great food, Quang Tran Restaurant is more than a place to eat – it's a historical trademark in itself that families and all diners will feel satisfied in and proud of all at the same time.
