Floating Markets: A River of Adventure

Mekong Delta became known globally during what is called the “Anti-American War.” But today, it is most identified with its floating markets.
The canal is the easiest and fastest means of transportation in the area, that is why most people conduct their transactions there. Different products are sold at the floating markets, from food to animals, and almost anything and everything you can find. Pigs, coconuts, mangoes, snakes, turtles, other fruits and vegetables, among others, are just items one can find in this unique and interesting place of trade. The boats have a pole where the wares are hanged for better viewing and more attraction to potential customers. Vendors sell these goods to dealers who in turn sell them to stores in the neighboring towns and to other wholesale dealers in big towns.
Floating markets are a common sight in Mekong Delta. But Phung Hiap and Cai Be are two of the largest. Phung Hiap is the biggest in particular, open as early as 4 in the morning and closes at 11 p.m. Tourists and locals alike who wish to catch the sale should take the first, earliest motorized boat ride because by sunrise, traffic along the canal is already congested and they may not be able to make it.
Cai Be Floating Market is located at the Western region of Southern Vietnam. It was established in the 19th century, during the reign of the Nguyen Dynasty. Like most floating markets in the locality, trading at Cai Be is always busy, a signification of the bustling life of the Western area of the country.
Other floating markets can be found along the Tien River, near the provinces of Tien Giang, Vinh Long, and Ben Tre. They are divided into two parts, into buying and selling places. But aside from markets, one can also find floating restaurants, floating bars, even floating gas stations, and just about any floating shops you can think of. Tourists can enjoy a delicious, traditional Vietnamese meal while taking a boat tour along the canal.
Floating markets can be quite noisy, even chaotic, but the joy in experiencing one can never be replaced by anything material.
