Hanoi in CNN’s Top 10 List for Street Food

Branded as a “street-eater’s paradise”, Hanoi placed among the top 10 Asian cities said to have the best street food. The list was prepared by CNN and published on March 23 on the US agency’s travel page CNNGo. The publication featured the ten typical street foods in ${bigcity_Hanoi:"Hanoi"}, including the famous "pho" and even naming the place at 112 Van Phuc Street to have the best of its kind. Vietnam’s popular drink, iced coffee, at 6 Hang Bac was also highlighted. Among the famous street foods named include Muc Nuong (Dried squid grilled over hot coals before being shredded and served with a spicy sauce) and Bun Cha (grilled meat eaten with rice vermicelli and fresh herbs). The latter was described in the publication as “the most delicious food available to man.” Suggesting the best one at 34 Hang Than Street.

Another specialty, “Bun rieu cua,” is a tangy tomato soup with freshwater crab flavor, rice vermicelli, pounded crabmeat, deep-fried tofu and congealed blood. 11 Hang Bac Street is said to be where you can find the finest one. Other delicious options for Hanoi travelers are barbecued kitchen on Ly Van Phuc Street, sticky rice at 6 Hang Bac, spring roll with fresh crabmeat at 58 Dao Duy Tu, fish porridge at 213 Hang Bang and grilled dried squid at 36 Hang Bo.

Vendors often cook in small shop fronts, serving their wares on the sidewalk on small plastic tables and chairs, yet they never fail to delight many foreigners who came by Hanoi.

Tracey Lister, a Melbourne chef for over 20 years, published two books about the Vietnam’s culinary back in her home country. The publications include “Vietnamese Street Food” in September last year and “KOTO: A Culinary Journey through Vietnam” in 2008. KOTO is the name of a charity vocational training project that she is a member of.

Other Asian street food destinations named in the list are Penang, Taipei, Bangkok, Fukuoka, Singapore, Seoul, Xi’an, Manila and Phnom Penh.
