Japanese Investor to Help Build Noi Bai Airport Second Terminal

Sojitz Corporation, a Japanese investing company, is interested in helping build the second terminal of the Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi. According to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), a meeting was held between their deputy director general Dinh Viet Thang and a representative from Sojitz Corporation, and the Japanese company showed interest in investing in the construction of the terminal.

CAAV noted that Sojitz Corporation began finding opportunities in airport development in Vietnam after it worked with the local aviation authority in 2007 over appropriate policies for air transportation in Vietnam. After that, the Japanese company supplied equipment to Noi Bai International Airport.

According to Thang, CAAV deputy general director, although there is no definite date yet for the construction, the T2 terminal of the Noi Bai International Airport is already in the process of bidding reviews and construction preparations. But Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trug Hai, in a meeting last month with concerned agencies, wanted the construction to begin as soon as possible so that the facility would be operational by 2014.

Early in the month, a 12-kilometer long, six-lane road joining Noi Bai International Airport and Nhat Tan Bridge started its construction. Financed by the Official Development Assistant (ODA) from the Japanese government and some capital from Vietnam, the road project costs VND 5 trillion (US$245 million). Expected to be finished and opened for public use by 2014, the distance between Central Hanoi and the airport will be substantially cut into half, saving people a lot of time and money.

The T2 terminal of the Noi Bai International Airport is a four-storey facility designed to cater up to 10 million passengers in the first phase alone, and 15 million clients afterward. It is considered to be one of the infrastructure projects in Hanoi in lieu of its socio-economic development.
