Lac Hamlet: Homestay Adventure

Lac Hamlet can be found at Hoa Binh Province, about 135 kilometers from Hanoi and 60 kilometers from Hoa Binh City. A fine picture of a rural life, the town is set between steep cliffs and lush-green rice paddies, a stunning sight all in all.
In order to earn some extra money and the tourists in turn wanting to bring home some souvenirs, local residents showcase their products in front of their stilt houses. Some of the town's specialties are brocaded items such as purses, handbags, and Pieu scarves, the latter being the traditional scarf of the Thai people, and therefore one of the bestsellers. They also make and sell long cloth rolls and a traditional shirt called Ao com. It has one-of-a-kind designs unique to the Thai people. Other special items like bamboo flutes, bows, knives, cross bows and wooden bells for buffaloes can also be bought at Lac Hamlet. All products are especially hand-made by the villagers, something that tourists particularly marvel at and appreciate.
At night, the small town becomes alive and festive with drumbeats and a dance performance prepared by the local residents themselves. Good-looking girls perform a pole dance and some songs, and even learn some foreign language to welcome their visitors. Each performance often ends with a bamboo dance. The guests are then invited to drink the local wine ruou can, wine drunk through pipes.
Aside from its natural beauty and local hand-made products, Lac Hamlet is also famous for its homestay tours. In fact, it's one significant factor that has kept the town's tourism alive for a while now. At present, it has 25 stilt houses built in a chessboard architectural design. An overnight stay costs VND50,000 – 70,000 per person.
After the festivity and at the end of the day, tourists who decide to stay overnight sleep in a stilt house like the villagers, with a blanket made from the bark of an Antiarias tree and sleeping on the floor. Lac Hamlet may be lacking in many commercial luxuries like most tourist destinations today, but its simplicity and natural beauty is what make tourists come to the village in the first place, even staying longer that they originally planned because of the rich and memorable experience that no modern amenities can ever buy.
