Mekong Delta to turn into Bird’s Paradise

The Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary Eco Tourism Park in Nha Mat Ward, Bac Lieu Town is one of the most attractive ecological tourist spots in the Mekong River Delta. It is home to several water birds, mainly teal, stork, heron, night heron and cormorant. Practically, around 78 unique species of birds thrive in the area, many of which are listed in Vietnam’s Red Book like the giang sen (Mycteria Leucocephala), sa hung (Halcyon coromando coromando) and duoi cut bung do (Pitta nympha Temminck et Schlegel).

Birds mostly gather there during the rainy season between May and October but mostly have large numbers thrive in it throughout the year. In addition to the rare birds, the sanctuary has over a hundred species of plants and animals, including several dozens of species species of fishes, amphibians, mammals, and reptiles; of which the entire community reflects a  highly biodiversity which must be preserved and developed. With the authorities and a local tourism firm Viet Dragon together, the work on developing the 130-hectare bird reserve have already began on December 13.

The project cost is estimated at VND130 billion (US$6.7 million) and aims for all rare flora and fauna as well as landscapes will be preserved and protected while tourists visit the site. At the same time, it will give both tourists and locals alike a chance to discover indigenous flora and fauna, and learn more about the life of wild birds. The project is expected to be completed before the coming Tet holiday.
