Muong Hoa Valley: Of Mystery and Feasts

Muong Hoa Valley is famous for its “mysterious graphics,” specifically ancient-carved stones spread across a four-kilometer long and two-kilometer wide mountain area. It has 159 known “strange” stones which were even flown in and researched by scientists from all over the world like Russia, France and Australia, just to name a few.
The majority of such stones are concentrated in Ban Pho. Scientists who studied the unique phenomenom discovered different kinds of sculptures on the stones which they believe are a heritage to mankind.
Although the specific carvings on the stones at Muong Hoa Valley are one-of-a-kind, a similar event occurred with the Dong Son culture which existed as far back as 2,300 - 3,000 years ago. The images on the stones were believed to be representations of the different ethnic groups which thrived through time. The ones specifically found at Sapa are believed to be of the Dao or Mong tribes.
Aside from its mysterious stones, Muong Hoa Valley is also a land of stunning landscapes and other naturally beautiful sights. Hoa Streams flows through as far as the Lao Chai, Ta Van and Hau Thao. Sapa has terraced fields which are definitely picture-worthy. Morever, its people have interesting cultures that also attract visitors to discover the place. The Hmong culture are adept at weaving and dyeing cloth. The Zay, Red Zao ang Black H'mong reside in small and isolated hamlets and have their own way of living and working.
Muong Hoa Valley is also rich in festivals and other festivities which draw in many visitors. Ta Van Commune, Sapa District prays for a bountiful harvest every year by welcoming it with a feast on the Dragon's first lunar month. Ethnic groups like the Giay, H'mong, Sapa and Dao, among others, travel to the village to join in the celebration, along with tourists from all over the globe. The origin of the festival traces back to Ta Van Giay ethnic group which traditionally practiced the Roong Pooc festival. But through time, it spread across the whole valley and became an official feast of the whole Muong Hoa.
Muong Hoa Valley is surely a mystery, a curious combination of strange stones and vibrant festivals. Yet it is this same wonder and interest that lures in people from all over the world, all the time, to discover and celebrate it for themselves.
