Saigon among World’s Top 10 Street Food Destinations

Food and Wine magazine, a monthly publication of American Express Publishing, recently came out with their list of the top 10 of world's best street food destinations. And to no surprise, ${bigcity_Ho_Chi_Minh_City:”HCMC”} is in it. Travelers to Vietnam always talk about how great the country’s cuisine is. And what’s not to fall in love with Vietnam food: it’s fresh, vibrant, satisfying, light and always served with a smile. By no debate, Vietnam’s street food is among the best in the world. Of course, being the center of Vietnam’s economic and cultural activity, Saigon is the best city in the country to try its street food. The options for street food are endless. With one cart after the other offering something new to the eyes and to the taste buds, you can never have enough.

According to Food and Wine magazine, among HCMC’s most famous street foods include pho (rice noodles), banh my kep pate (sandwich with pate), and banh xeo (literary sizzling cake or fried pancakes made of rice flour, turmeric powder, and slivers of fatty pork, shrimp). Pho is the closest thing Vietnam has to a national dish. This hearty noodle soup so popular nationwide and though mostly a breakfast dish, streets stalls selling it are crowded at any time of day. Small carts serving cheap eats are practically every corner and in every wide and narrow street in the city.

Food & Wine magazine was founded in 1978 by Ariane and Michael Batterberry, American food writers. It features recipes, cooking tips, travel information, restaurant reviews, chefs, wine pairings and seasonal/holiday content. Why the magazine came up with such list, and as many would agree, street food plays an important role in the gastronomy of the world. Among the other places in the list include Bangkok (Thailand), Penang (Malaysia), Berlin (Germany), Austin (Texas, United States).
