Vietnam’s Computer Science Students Show World Class Talent, Gains Int’l Investment

After the international success of the game Flappy Bird, Vietnam’s technological newcomers are proving to the world that they have so much to offer in the computer industry. As such, foreign investors are coming in with big fundings to the promising sector.

For the longest time, Vietnam has always been almost invisible in the technological field compared to other countries. But ever since the Hanoi-based application became an instant worldwide hit, it suddenly jumped to front row and appointed as the Southeast Asian production hub of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a very influential South Korean electronics company. Global franchises that have been operating in the country for a certain amount of time have also started delving into the areas of research and development since the accomplishment.

In March of this year then, international giants such as Goldman Sachs and Standard Chartered PLC raised their stakes by 28$ million specifically in the e-wallet MoMo. 500 Startups, a Silicon Valley-based venture capitalist, invested $10 million especially in the automated marketing service Beeketing which has estimated sales of $2 million this year, with clients usually coming from the United States. Foreign investors are continually coming in with intent to fund 10-20 companies in Vietnam in just a period of one year.

Vietnam appeals to the global investment sector because its labour is cheap labour compared to countries like China. Its membership to Trans-Pacific Partnership also makes it attractive to investors because it guarantees free trade deals with the European Union. But more than everything else, its brilliant young minds in the field of technology is what elevated it into the global ladder, earning the confidence of investors worldwide. Moreover, unlike in other countries, start ups in Vietnam are generally independent from government support, even having its own version of the Silicon Valley in order to support its own needs.

Vietnam’s start ups hone in on e-commerce with sales reaching billions or almost 50% increase in revenue. Giaohangnhanh and Lozi are just some of the companies which have made an incredible contribution to the gross domestic product of Vietnam.

Vietnam’s technological sector has proven its worth to the world with its series of accomplishments, accidental or otherwise. With its army of promising minds, it won’t be long before it will produce another set of exceptional products that are truly globally competitive.
