Vietnamese Film Festival to Launch in L.A. on April 7th

First launched in 2003, the Vietnamese International Film Festival (also called ViFF) was organized by the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association and UCLA's Vietnamese Language and Culture Centre which takes place in United States. A biennial event, it will be now on its fifth this month, and have shown huge growth over the years since it have started.

The theme for this year's film festival is "Reel Momentum,"  where around 67 contemporary feature and short films by Vietnamese directors, both established and emerging, were entered. The entries, along with works from makers from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Philippines, Britain and China, will be screened throughout US between April 7-17. The festival, which is to take place at UC Irvine, the Bowers Museum, and UCLA, is expecting more than 4,000 guests. Admission for high school students and senior citizens will be free.

Vietnamese movies to take part in the festival include Choi Voi (Adrift), Canh Dong Bat Tan (Floating Lives), Bay Rong (Clash), 14 Ngay Phep (14 Days Off), Nhung Nu Hon Ruc Ro (Bright Kisses) and Sai Gon Yo! Other highlights from the film festival include the U.S. premiere of "Mother Fish" on April 9 at UC Irvine, with a spotlight award going to writer/director Khoa Do; the action film "Clash," starring Thanh Van Ngo and Johnny Tri Nguyen; a sneak preview screening of "Touch," a film about the Vietnamese women who work at nail salons; and "Floating Lives," a drama starring Dustin Nguyen.

Apart from showcasing Vietnamese art and prowess in the movie industry, the film screening and the entire festival is an opportunity to see how a local, primarily Vietnamese American audience responds to these variety of films. Some of the other entries has never been seen before even in the Vietnamese community and could be an interesting way to interact and study responses from different viewers (both Vietnamese and of other nationalities). The festival is expected to continue to bring entertainment and inspiration to filmmakers and film-lovers in the years to come.
